Introduction

Silicone emulsions are inert, heat stable and non-toxic products that are suitable for various industrial applications where lubrication, gloss, antistatic, protective and releasing properties are either a requirement or advantageous. It is a formulation of silicone oil, water and other necessary emulsifying systems to achieve a stable emulsion. In terms of chemical perspective, silicone consists of a finite chain of silicone and oxygen atoms bonded together. Along with these bonds, silicone itself has 2 additional bonds in organic groups. Silicone emulsions can be divided into 3 types. They are anionic, cationic and non-ionic. Most of the silicone emulsions are non-ionic which makes them compatible with various applications and systems. However, some applications may require cationic and anionic emulsions as well.

  • pH Level: Variation in pH level is not a major concern for silicone emulsions as it does not destabilize the emulsion.   • Viscosity: Viscosity is used to measure the fluidity of a silicone emulsion. Silicone emulsions can either have very high or very low viscosity typically below 1000 cps which makes them highly fluid products.
  • Dry Extract: Dry extracts are also known as solids. It refers to the percentage of non-evaporative material of the emulsion after the drying process. It is also related to the quantity of the silicone content which is considered an active component in these types of products. Usually, silicone emulsions are formulated with dry extracts ranging between 20% to 60%.
  • Filtration: Silicon emulsions have low viscosity which allows them to filter through fine meshes typically ranging from 250 microns to 100 microns. This allows easy formulations in products such as adhesives, varnishes, paints and coatings without damaging their desired properties.
  • Stability: Silicone emulsions are considered stable products when manufactured correctly. They can be stored for extended periods without any separation or instability. Some of these silicones are also capable of withstanding freeze-thaw cycles which makes them ideal for very cold climates.
  • Preservatives: Various preservatives such as isothiazolinones, formaldehyde releasers and additives like bronopol are commonly used in silicone emulsions. Some emulsions also use food preservatives such as sorbates and benzoates in some specific versions.
  • Particle Size: Silicone emulsions are small in size which directly links to their stability. It is said that the smaller the emulsion particle, the more stable it tends to be.
  • Free Monomer: Some silicone emulsions tend to contain free silicone monomers which are either volatile or semi-volatile in nature. They are analyzed using gas cinematography.
  • Wetting: Silicon emulsions can cause wetting issues due to their inherent properties. Thus, when they are used in coatings, they may lead to uneven coverage or surface defects.
  • Toxicity: The main component of silicone emulsion is silicone oil which is considered non-toxic or undangerous. Thus, silicone emulsion can be discharged into wastewater as it does not pose any problems when the silicone settles with the purification sludge.
