Types of Industrial Grease: Lithium vs. Silicone vs. Moly – Complete Comparison Guide

Introduction

Machineries and equipment of various industrial settings are subjected to extreme operating conditions, high loads, varying temperatures and constant motion. They require a proper lubrication process to improve their longevity, reliability and efficiency. They use grease lubricants for this process as grease plays a key role in reducing friction, preventing wear and protecting them from contaminations like dust, water and chemicals.

Grease is basically a semi-solid lubricant comprising of 3 main ingredients:

  • Base Oils: Base oils cover almost 70-90% of the grease. They can be mineral-based, synthetic or even bio-based. The type of base oil determines the viscosity and temperature performance of the grease.
  • Thickener: The thickener is a soap or non-soap material that is used to give grease a semi-solid consistency and help the lubricant to retain its place. Some common types of thickeners are lithium, calcium, aluminum and polyurea compounds.
  • Additives: Additives are added in this formulation to improve specific properties such as oxidation resistance, water repellency, extreme pressure and anti-corrosion characteristics.

Types of Grease Lubricants

Below stated are some of the main types of grease lubricants:

  • Lithium-Based Grease: Lithium-based grease is composed of lithium soap as a thickener and mineral or synthetic oil as a base oil. Its important properties are excellent water resistance capacity, high-temperature tolerance and multi-purpose capabilities. Due to these properties, this grease is mainly used in automotive, industrial machinery and general-purpose applications. It is known for its versatility and affordability.
  • Calcium-Based Grease: Calcium-based grease uses calcium soap as its thickener. Its key properties are superior water resistance and temperature tolerance up to 60°C or 140°F. It is widely used in marine environments, low-temperature and low-speed applications.
  • Lithium Complex Grease: This grease is basically an advanced version of lithium grease and it consists of a complex formulation of lithium as a thickener. Its temperature tolerance is up to 200°C or 392°F and it also offers excellent mechanical stability and load-carrying capacity. It is considered ideal for high-temperature and high-load industrial applications such as bearings, gears and heavy machinery.
  • Polyurea Grease: Polyurea grease uses non-soap thickeners along with synthetic or mineral oils as their base oils. Its temperature tolerance ranges up to 220°C or 428°F. It offers long life service due to its high oxidation stability and is compatible with electric motor bearings. It is most commonly used in electric motors, sealed-for-life bearings and high-temperature machinery.
  • Aluminum Complex Grease: This grease uses aluminum soap as its thickener. Its properties are excellent water resistance and adhesion, withstanding temperature up to 190°C or 374°F and anti-corrosion characteristics. It is considered ideal for applications that are often exposed to water or corrosive environments such as food processing and marine equipment.
  • Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly) Grease: This grease consists of molybdenum disulfide as an additive. It offers exceptional load-carrying and anti-wear properties and reduces friction under extreme pressure and high-load environments. It is considered ideal for heavy-duty equipment such as mining machinery, vehicles used in construction and agriculture equipment.
  • Silicone Grease: The base oil of silicone grease is silicone oil. It also consists of an inert thickener. This grease is known for offering excellent thermal stability over a wide range of temperature ranging from -40°C to 200°C or -40°F to 392°F. it is also chemically inert and non-corrosive in nature. Silicone grease is widely used in electrical components, rubber seals and plastic materials due to its compatibility with non-metallic material.
  • Food-Grade Grease: Food-grade grease includes the components that comply with NSF H1 or FDA regulatory standards. This grease is used to ensure safety in the incidental food contact. It is non-toxic in nature and is resistant to water washout. It also offers high oxidation stability. This grease is specifically designed for food and beverage processing equipment, pharmaceuticals and other hygiene-sensitive environments.
  • High-Temperature Grease: High-temperature grease is often a combination of synthetic oils and high-performance thickeners such as polyurea or lithium. This grease can withstand temperatures exceeding 250°C or 482°F. It is also resistant to oxidation and thermal degradation. It is mainly used in furnaces, ovens and other high-temperature equipment.
  • Barium Complex Grease: This grease is made up of barium-based soap thickener and mineral or synthetic oil. It offers excellent water and chemical resistance, can withstand temperatures up to 140°C or 284°F and is anti-corrosion in nature. It is mostly used in chemical plants, marine environments and applications that require high corrosion resistance.
  • Benton (Clay) Grease: Benton grease uses inorganic clay as its thickener and mineral or synthetic oil as its base oil. It offers thermal stability up to 260°C or 500°F. It is non-melting and resistant to water washout in nature. It also performs well under high loads. It is considered ideal for industrial applications such as steel mills, kilns, etc.

Factors to be Considered while Choosing the Correct Grease

Below stated are some of the important factors to be considered while choosing among lithium grease, silicone grease and moly grease for one’s application:

  • The high-temperature performance of the greases.
  • The water resistance capacity of these greases.
  • Compatibility of these greases with other materials used in the application.
